Voacanga
africana seeds grow into trees that are native to West Aftrica
and grow to heights over 30 feet.
The tree has several uses industrially medically and spiritually.
There is a latex produced from the tree. An analgesic and
the shamans ingest the treebark and roootbark
as a brain stimulant and eat the seeds for visionary purposes.
Reported
to contain voacangine (carbomethoxy-ibogaine), ibogamin, plus
many unidentified alkaloids in
the root & trunk bark, leaves and seeds.
In one species ( Voacanga africana ) the alkaloid content
has been reported as 5-10% in root bark,
4-5% in trunk bark, 0.3-0.45% in leaves and
1.5% in seeds.
Much higher than any other species of Voacanga.
There are some constituents of Voacanga that people should
be aware of.
Vobtusine is a cardiac depressant and can be fatal in high
doses
Voacanga is not sold for human consumption.
